“Kristie, may I speak to you please,” my boss’s friendly yet intimidating voice loomed over the gray cubicle wall. My heart skipped a beat as I took my hand off the mouse. The swivel chair squeaked as I got up from my desk and turned the corner. I nervously anticipated bad news, or criticism on design. But instead, I was met with an excited grin -- he informed me that my design had been selected for the 2010 USC Spirit Shirt*. I was in shock. I pinched myself a few times and called both of my parents with the incredible news. Six months later, seeing my work on random USC students all over campus, I still can’t believe it.

Fall of 2008, as an undeclared freshman at USC facing the daunting challenges of overcoming homesickness and doing my own laundry, choosing a major befitting of my personality was not the toughest on my list. As a kid I took summer art classes for 10 years and became engrossed in the world of imagination. So I threw together some past work from high school and applied to the Roski School of Fine Arts. I also decided to check out a fall semester job fair. One booth immediately sparked my interest when someone asked, “Do you like to use Photoshop?” Memories of myself spending hours and hours photoshopping my friends’ heads onto celebrities’ bodies surfaced to mind. I was hired at USC Spectrum Design Studio; this man became my boss.

That day onwards, by creating marketing materials for numerous student organizations, I started to build a diverse design portfolio and learned the skills that classes could not offer. Through client interaction I was exposed to a wide variety of design needs, processes and aesthetics. I also got to work with talented individuals like my boss: John Cheng (‘09), current director at USC Spectrum Design Studio.

There is no instructional manual to get from point A to point B.
You’re free to start at a different place than someone else

Born and raised in Palos Verdes, California, John began to attend classes at Art Center in Pasadena as a high-schooler. In 2005 he was admitted to Roski School of Fine Arts major in graphic design.

Throughout his major, John also dabbled in business courses through Marshall School of Business. With some marketing classes he learned the relevance of design in advertising, and started to think of himself as a brand, and sell and promote it by developing a strong personal presence. Organizational behavior class taught him the dynamics of situational intrapersonal relationships in the work environment.

In the spring of 2009, John was accepted to Special Projects class, an elite, invitation-only design course that aims to bridge the gap between 3 areas of study: design, business and engineering – business students set up focus groups and relayed the research results; designers created marketing materials such as packaging, ads and websites; meanwhile the engineers were responsible for all the technical and executional aspects of the project.

For John, it was an interesting experience collaborating with people with other expertise. The ability to work with new ideas from unfamiliar backgrounds and contexts, at a more specialized art school like Roski, was an extremely valuable.

Such interdisciplinary education goes a long way. “Having a diverse campus inspires a wider range of conversation among students. Because in a university setting, there is no instructional manual to get from point A to point B. You’re free to do anything you are able, and start at a different place than someone else”.

Try Everything!

And that is exactly what Courtney Kawata (‘07) decided to do. Growing up in Newport Beach, and ever since her only graphic design class in high school, she was intrigued by the duality and flexibility of art mixed with other forms of creative expression. USC embodied everything she was looking for to explore the endless creative opportunities in a spectrum of industries.

She illustrated political cartoons for the Daily Trojan, USC’s daily newspaper. Inspired by some of her most memorable professors, she started the first AIGA USC chapter, in an effort to establish networking and communication among design students and the design industry. Courtney majored in Fine Arts and minored in Business.

Business Communications prepared her for work by improving her ability to address a wide range of audiences. Financial Real Estate and computer coding classes provided a nice balance between her left and right brain instincts. Throughout her entire college career she was open to every possibility and tangent imaginable, whether it dealt with design or not. All of these contributed to her diverse collection of skills and work ethics. At her job currently, Courtney must able to immediately switch gears from working on a project for Tron to another dealing with fairies. It’s the unique range of courses with overlapping themes at USC that train her mind to be capable of such multitasking.

Courtney professes to, “Try everything! You will limit yourself when you graduate if you don’t know about other areas of study. Designers must be a jack of all trades… and know how to communicate well. … if you don’t, they won’t pick you.”

[And education] beyond a specific craft, or art form,
is going to be more valuable in the long run.

The Lead Designer and Project Manager for American Apparel, Chris Berdine (‘05) was the one that they did pick. He majored in Fine Arts at Roski School with an emphasis in design and intermedia; minored in advertising.

After an internship with Studio Number One, a celebrated LA-based creative firm, in his senior year Chris applied and was later hired at the art and graphics department at American Apparel. He day-to-day work included designing store fronts, signage, packaging, billboards and bus wraps, just to name a few. Despite tremendous workload and a huge learning curve, during his 5.5 years with the company, the design department grew four fold, with a record set for the highest number of stores opened in one year.

Because Roski’s design program at the time was just blossoming, outside work for American Apparel, classes “were more like personal time with the professors” for Chris. “Each design course was a new experience getting to know each of the professors and their unique perspectives on their respective industries.”

On the other hand, non-art classes played an equally important role in Chris’s career. Knowledge in business, communications, media planning and buying helped to balance the fundamentals of modern day marketing practice. At American Apparel Chris was the only one with education in media buying and rates, and was therefore given an interesting combination of responsibilities that he would not have been prepared for if not for his minor in advertising. Bumping shoulders with students from other fields, taking occasional cinema class and general education courses all contributed to his success as a designer. It’s not hard to see how a strong and diverse academic foundation that pans across arts and sciences became highly useful in design and vice versa. Furthermore, it will continue to build a more well-rounded education. As Chris said himself, “logically a school that offers more than just a limited education in a specific craft, or art form, is going to be more valuable in the long run.”

Having been in design for only about three years, I’m growing to realize that I still have so much to learn. After speaking with these three extremely talented professionals, I question whether I have taken advantage of all the resources and opportunities available to me; and whether I am ready enough for the journey ahead. Nonetheless, the engagingly diverse atmosphere and comprehensive interdisciplinary education formed at USC truly allow me and my peers to learn from each other and create experiences that will be undoubtedly beneficial whatever path I take. And with this in mind, I think I’ll be just fine.

The design area is having it's first ever type show. The exhibition showcases art + design works that feature letters in a multitude of different medias - including oatmeal, string, paper, light, and bar codes.
The opening reception is scheduled for Wednesday Jan 26th from 5 to 8pm with a special typography cupcake interactive piece by Natasha Wu, Helen Wang and Tsz Chen being revealed. All are welcomed.

Hope you all had a great summer. We will be having our very first event of the 2010 school year THIS SATURDAY (8/28/10) in Harris 101 from 2:00pm to 5:00pm. Define: DESIGN will bring panelists from the design industry to talk about their lives and how they got to where they are now. The panelists will be Haven Lin-Kirk (the design department chair at USC) and Daniel Chou (art director of Inheritance Magazine). Join us for some good conversation, networking, and information about design. Light refreshments will be served following the program. Next semester we will be meeting Tuesday nights from 5-6. Our first meeting will be this Tuesday the 12th so we can collect Emerge artwork.

FIRST MEETING IN SPRING
Those of you that designed postcards for stimulatte, we will continue that exchange at our first meeting!! The theme is mythological pet/creature/or spirit, so pick one or create your own and design a postcard. Print out at least 15 postcards with your creature on it to swap at our meeting.

EMERGE
Please decide on what piece of art you will be submitting for Emerge. Ten students from each LA school will be selected to be in the show. Having your work in the show is a honor and a chance to showcase your design work to the professional community. Last year hundreds of industry professionals attended the opening party. Please turn in your piece for the show the week we return to school in the office.

RENEGADE CRAFT FAIR
We may have our own AIGA USC booth to sell our designs at the fair. If you have anything that you would like to sell at the fair please develop these ideas asap!

The teacup auction is up so place your bids! The auction ends on Friday at 5pm. You can collect your cups at the Teacup Party on Monday November 23 at 5pm in WAH 105. There will be food, coffee and tea.

STIMULATE: MYTHOLOGICAL CREATURE POSTCARDS- DEC 3
Yesterday's meeting we discussed the next Stimulate event organized by Loyola Marymount University at The Cow's End Cafe in Venice on December 3, 7-9pm. The event will be a postcard swap. The theme is mythological pet of the month so pick a mythological creature or create your own. Print out at least 15 postcards with your creature on it to swap at the event. You can print them through Overnight Prints (http://www.overnightprints.com/postcards) or create them yourself. We will be organizing carpools to this event so get your postcards ready by December 3!

Tea Cup Installation TOMORROW and Meeting on MONDAY

FRIDAY NOVEMBER 13 @ 12 outside WAH 105 we will be installing for our Tea Cup fundraiser. Anyone who designed a cup and is free please stop by after 12 to help with the installation. The silent auction will take place this upcoming week so look for the auction book beside the case to place your bids on your favorite designs. The starting price is 5 $. The auction bidding ends on Friday November 20. The winning bids can collect their new cups at the Mad Hatter Tea Party on November 23rd (5pm in WAH 105.)

The next AIGA USC meeting is this Monday in WAH 105 at 5pm. We will be doing a postcard design activity for an upcoming AIGA LA Stimulate event on December 3 at The Cow's End Cafe (mark your calendars-we will organize carpools to this event.)

Art, Culture, Politics: A Conversation with Shepard Fairey
Wednesday, November 4, 7 p.m.

Admission is free. While advance reservations are full, unclaimed tickets as well as a limited number of seats for a live broadcast will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis at the event check-in. Check-in will begin at 6:15 p.m. in the Annenberg East Lobby.
Shepard Fairey is a contemporary artist, graphic designer and political and social activist. His iconic images, like the OBEY artwork and the Obama “HOPE” poster, are central elements of a cultural and creative economy. In a lively conversation, Shepard Fairey will discuss art, politics and consumer culture.

This week, USC AIGA will be meeting on Tuesday at 5 p.m. at WATT-105 INSTEAD OF on Monday. This way, all the officers can make it and more members as well.

Please bring any designs that you are currently working on. We will be holding a kind of show-and-tell, and it will be a great way for you to receive feedback on any work that is still in progress or work that you hope to refine.

For all those who missed out on designing a cup last time and all those who wish to design another one, we will also be holding another session for cup-decorating. These additional cups will be displayed alongside the previous ones for the upcoming auction!

We just finished our meeting and there are lots of exciting events coming up!

Ewa Wojciak a USC faculty member has brought a wonderful opportunity to us! She has received a Visions and Voices grant for an Event on April 15th called "Shelf Life, A Big Day for Small Press". The event is being held in the Watt and Harris courtyards, it will consist of numerous famous speakers and there will be upwards of 200-300 vendors. The speakers and vendors are all "zine" and self press related.

She is looking for our help with the poster and advertising for the event. The posters will have a vintage punk scene feel and will be multi layer silkscreen that we will produce as a group next thursday.

Stop by on Thursday February 26 Watt Hall at 5:00pm be a part of the creation of the one of a kind different posters that will advertise it!

For the first time the renegade craft fair is coming to Los Angeles, this is a nationally known fair. As a group we want to submit entries to have our own booth at the fair this summer.

Hello All,

This is Marie Hildebrand, your new President. I hope you all had a great summer. The semester is just getting started so i wanted to update you all on the upcoming Welcome party event and a few other subjects covered in Wednesday's meeting.

The AIGA "Round up" welcome party is scheduled for Friday September 19th 12 - 2pm in Watt 105. Look for fliers around Roski. We will be extending the invitation to many members of the Roski faculty, some design professionals and anyone interested in AIGA. This is a round themed event so there will be button and sticker making workshops. This is also a potluck type event so please try to bring goodies, especially if they are "Round"!!! we will discuss the past semester and possibilities for the fall semester, so please think about bringing items from past AIGA projects/events (items from the silk screening workshop, portfolio day pictures/items...etc) to share and give potential new members an idea of our group. We will be printing fliers for this event in the next few days, a few extras will be Watt 105 for you to hand out in classes or to friends.

Also i wanted to bring your attention to the Design/AIGA board outside of Watt 105. This can be a great hub of information for design students. Feel free to post design related information, galleries, events, etc on the board.

Eric Gill is an award winning designer of visual effects and mechanical special effects. He has worked for Walt Disney Imagineering, Applied Minds, and Amorphic Robot Works to name just a few. He says of his work, “Every really good project was the result of an evolutionary process that involved both intense planning, and a willingness to alter those plans at any moment. Currently in the design world, we rely on computer drafting to create our plans, and it’s an amazing tool for visualizing what might be created. But it can limit us if we treat these plans as blueprints, ignoring the possibilities that present themselves as the actual creation itself is born.”

Pash is Creative Director and Principal of Digital Soup, a Culver City, California-based multidisciplinary design firm he founded in 1993. In January of 2005 Pash joined forces with a longtime friend and client brand innovator Brad Beckermanto become Creative Director at Cinq Group, a brand development agency specializing in premier lifestyle marketing and image development. His work for CINQ also saw him overseeing all creative services for Trunk Ltd, a classic apparel lifestyle brand launched under the Cinq umbrella in 2003, and for which Digital Soup, together with Cinq, designed the brand identity. As of September 1, 2007, Pash is returning his entire focus back to Digital Soup.

From 2002 to 2004 Pash served as President of the Los Angeles chapter of AIGA, the fourth largest of its 47 chapters nationwide. During his tenure the chapter grew to over 1,000 members. He frequently judges design competitions, most recently the Pele Awards in Hawaii and the XIV Premio Qurum Awards in Mexico City. Pash is also a design educator; he teaches Logo Design and Design II at UCLA's celebrated Visual Arts Extension program and frequently guest lectures at other art schools. Pash is on the Advisory Board for HOW Magazine's annual Design Conference, where he is a frequent speaker. Pash's book, Inspirability, was published in 2005 and features personal interviews with 40 of the world's most prominent and interesting graphic designers. In addition to its presence in bookstores everywhere, it proudly sits on a shelf among products (not books!) in the MoMA gift store in New York City.

Gail Swanlund's work has been exhibited internationally, including "California Dream" at the Mois du Graphisme d'Echirolles, and "Belles Lettres" at San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. She has been recognized by the ACD, AIGA, and TDC; her work is published in numerous design anthologies. Swanlund cut her teeth writing for the experimental and influential typography journal Emigre, and currently writes for various design publications; and is a Fellow at the Design Institute of Minnesota. Swanlund is a design faculty member at CalArts.

Along with STRIPE collaborator Jon Sueda, Swanlund's work has been recognized by the Adobe, American Center for Design, American Institute of Graphic Arts, the Art Director's Club, and The Type Directors Club; featured in Emigre, Eye, Print, IdN, Step, ID, and Zoo; published in select design anthologies: All Messed Up: Unpredictable Graphics, Type Design: Radical Innovations and Experimentation, :Output, Graphic Radicals, Radical Graphics, The Graphic Edge, East Coast/West Coast; in the permanent collection of San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and design curator, Merrill C. Berman.

David Mayes served on the AIGA-LA board with the Development Committee for the 2002-2004 term and moved to the Finance Committee for the 2004-2006 term. He has worked with Programming during the past five years and been involved with AIGA-Los Angeles since 1997. David Mayes’s career in the printing industry has spanned more than 22 years. He has worked in all phases of printing from pre-press to management to sales. He has a deep affection for the creative process with special appreciation for the collaboration between printer and designer. David is inspired by the process of taking ideas conceived in an artist’s imagination and delivering a tangible product with colors, textures and ideas brought to life. David began his tenure at Typecraft Wood & Jones in 1999. He came to the firm for the opportunity to work with a Smithsonian award-winning commercial printing company that has partnered with the design community, as well as with museum, university, and corporate clients. Tracing its origins back to 1907, Typecraft has a tradition of craftsmanship combined with innovation. The company has been particularly pro-active in adopting new printing technologies including computer-to plate, web-based soft-proofing and Staccato stochastic imaging.

AIGA LA Submission Request

AIGA LA is hosting a design show called EMERGE at Cal State LA and all members are welcome to submit their stuff. Here is the info:

Work for EMERGE will need to be submitted to the Fine Arts Gallery at
Cal State L.A. no later than Friday December 7. Work should be labeled
with student name, AIGA member number, school.

Let's show Southern California how great the USC designers are!

Green(er) Design Workshop

Do you want to become a more eco-conscious designer?

AIGA USC is excited to announce Green(er) Design as part of our Pro Speaker Series. Featuring David Mayes of Typecraft, a print house dedicated to innovative practices, this workshop will focus on the importance of using recycled materials in design and the benefits of changing your design practice.

The workshop will take place on Saturday, NOVEMBER 10th from 11 AM to 1 PM in WAH 105.

Seating is limited. If you are interested in attending this event and you aren't a member of our Facebook group, please RSVP by emailing aigausc@gmail.com.

Hennessey + Ingalls Field Trip

AIGA USC is headed to Santa Monica to check out the LARGEST visual arts bookstore in North America.

When: Saturday, October 20th, 2007
Where: Hennessey + Ingalls, 214 Wilshire Blvd, Santa Monica, CA,

When we arrive at H+I, a bookstore representative will give us a personal tour. Then after much browsing (and buying), we can all have lunch together on the promenade!

If you are interested in carpooling, please meet in front of the Fine Arts Main Office at 11am. If you are planning on driving individually, you can meet the rest of us in Santa Monica at 12pm.

AIGA SF: Cause/Affect Design Competition

Great opportunity to be recognized!!!!

AIGA SF is holding a graphic design competition which celebrates the work of designers who positively impact our society.

All work entered must promote or support social good (i.e. raise awareness about a cause or condition, promote a non-profit or educational organization, or celebrate an arts event or institution). Basically, it can't profit a commercial organization.

Selected work will be showcased at the cause/affect awards ceremony at the AIGA SF office, opent ot the whole design community, and may be entered into their online People's Choice Award.

Anyone can enter! (AIGA USC-- let's represent!)

It's finally here and its exciting!

Pin Up! highlights the print and three-dimensional work of USC's design students.

The show will be in the Helen Lindhurst Gallery in Watt Hall from Monday, Sept. 24th to Thursday, Oct. 4th. The reception will take place on Wednesday, September 26th from 6pm to 9pm.

A collaborative group project exploring the division between good and bad design will take place at the reception. Participate by bringing a piece of design (either good or bad) with you, and pin it up on the wall!

Pin Up! Show -- Call for entries!

In two weeks, AIGA USC is putting up a design show entitled Pin Up! in
the Helen Lindhurst Gallery. Pin Up! is the first design-centric show
to hit USC in quite some time. Designers this is your chance to shine!

Submission specifications:

-Submissions must be design related.
-Both print and 3-D work will be accepted.
-Mount print items on 3/16 black foam core board, cut flush (i.e. no borders).
-Label print items with name, email address, year in school and design course.
-3-D work should be protected upon submission and clearly labeled (see
above labeling specifications).

The deadline is Monday, September 17th and the drop-off box will be
located in the fine arts office (WAH 104).

Accepted entries will be notified by email on September 20th.

We've graduated! Wow what a crazy semester! I'm happy and proud to say that I've graduated from the Roski School of Fine Arts. I'm also very glad to have been a part of AIGA USC. I'm kind of sad to not be at USC anymore but excited to see what is in store for the future. I'm sure I'll be around USC and will certainly visit!
